THE FASCINATING FORTS

The Fort Based Stations... Sutch... City... Invicta... KING... 390... Essex

This compilation features many of the offshore wartime forts that were seized by a number of Radio Stations in the sixties pirate radio era.

Radio Sutch was the station that made its home on the Shivering Sands Fort. Hear an excellent example of the man himself, Screaming Lord Sutch, behind the mike in 1964. Another early session from Brian Paul is included. The story developed as Sutch’s manager Reg Calvert, took over the station. The name was soon changed to Radio City; Calvert was later shot dead over a dispute involving equipment.

Two popular presenters on Radio City were Tom Edwards & Phil Jay, both their shows are featured. Hear the DJ’s saying farewell to listeners & talk of their experiences on the final session to close down.

Radio Invicta used the abandoned Red Sands Army Fort off of Whitstable in Kent for its broadcasts; it later changed its name to ‘KING’, then to Radio 390. Roger Gomez presents his show from ‘KING’ along with a session on the Pot Luck Show from Invicta and an early test broadcast.

Graham Gill on Radio 390 presents one of his regular shows only this time its his last, he includes many of his favourite tracks. This is concluded with the final moments from Radio 390 that very day & the closing speech.

From the Knock John Tower came Radio Essex which was aimed at a smaller more local audience, featured is a show by David Sinclair an excellent example of how the station sounded at the time...

This Compilation of Fort based stations runs for over 6 hours it is an excellent representation of how these stations sounded at the time, all in very basic and difficult conditions with limited resources but 'fascinating radio' that is without doubt.

The reproduction quality is variable at times but most of the audio represents the general sound these stations provided with the transmitting limitations they had available.

THE INTRIGUING RADIO CITY STORY

The Tower Of Power on the Shivering Sands 1964 to 1967

The complete history of the Station that made its home on the Shivering Sands Fort between 1964 to1967 is told by many of the people involved with the Sutch & City projects. The story starts with a publicity stunt staged by Screaming Lord Sutch which turned into a radio station on a disused wartime fort in the Thames estuary. Unfortunately the station was to hit the headlines with a boarding then shooting of its manager, this was bad news for the pirates. The whole Story is revealed with comment from presenters, management & others involved at the time plus news items on events surrounding the stations history.

Included are many off-air recordings through to the final closedown of the station and a great 1 hour extract of the Ian McRae Show 1966.
